Aircraft Maintenance Engineering – Everything That You Need To Know

Aircraft maintenance engineering is not that popular as compared to its counterparts. And this is the reason; the field is often subjected to confusion. Helping you out, here is the detailed info on this.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering

Many might think of Aircraft maintenance engineering, AME as any other degree or a diploma course. This is however not the complete truth because Aircraft maintenance engineering is more off a training programme for any candidate who is interested in pursuing a career in Aircraft maintenance engineering and henceforth has to undertake. With the aviation sector growing at a rapid pace with its advanced and sophisticated aircrafts, technological inventions and a more open sky policy allowing new operators to enter the market and various other factors has helped the sector by working as an attraction for many people who now want to pursue a career that is in one way or the other connected with the field of aviation.  Fuelling the interest of many pursuant of this field is also the large network of domestic airlines in the country and also the several international airlines that operate from within the country. This has helped broaden the horizon for many.

What is Aircraft Maintenance Engineering?

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering deals with the task of maintaining an aircraft and keeping it in an ideal condition to fly. The aircraft maintenance engineer repairs and maintains an aircraft in order to ensure flight safety. An aircraft can not take flight without the previous consent of an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

Procedure and eligibility

Aircraft Maintenance Engineering is a three year long training programme that is offered by many prestigious colleges across the country and the candidates who complete their training successfully are issued a license by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). However you must ascertain that the university is approved by the DGCA before you join it. The training process is rigorous and you will find that only a few selected universities offer training on heavy aircrafts and engines.

The eligibility criteria for the candidates who are interested in acquiring admission in an institute for the training is that they should have passed their 10+2 examinations with minimum 50% marks in aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. You can also seek admission for this course if you have acquired a diploma in any branch of engineering be it a B.Sc degree holder.

There is no discrimination on the basis of your gender. Any one who is interested in undertaking this training course and satisfies the eligibility criteria is welcome to undergo the training to become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

The approximate cost of availing this training is around Rs.1.5 lakh but may vary from university to university. As stated above that it is only after you receive a license from the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is your training complete and you can pursue your career as a licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer.

Top colleges

Rajiv Gandhi Aviation Academy, School of Aviation Science and Technology, Indian Institute of Aeronautics, School of Aeronautics, Indian Institute of Aeronautical Science, VSM Aerospace, Hindustan Aviation Academy.

Career options

After receiving your license you are competent to become an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, AME you can also qualify for Associate Membership of Aeronautical Society of India, you can also find a well paying job as an engineer with the eminent firms and companies like BHEL, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL), Private and Government airlines, among others.

In case of AME, the institute should have recognition from DGCA, Director General of Civil Aviation. This enables the students to receive the license of an engineer who looks after the maintenance of any aircraft and checks its airworthiness before it is ready to take off. This is a work laden with risks and responsibilities hence; the candidate gets the license only when he is able to prove the requisite ability and mettle.

How to seek admission in AME?

In order to enrol in this course, you need to pass the AIAMEE, i.e., All India Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Examination which an entrance test to crack open the gate and secure admission in an institution that teaches AME course. The exam is held online, after which the selected candidates are sent for counselling. So, if you are able to cross the hurdle of this 90 minutes multiple choice exam, then you will come one step closer to a secure and lavish career.

Syllabus and who can apply?

While selecting a candidate for this course, the institutes consider and compare their physical and educational eligibility. Here are some important points to note down:
  • At the time of admission, the age of the candidate should be lower than 24.
  • He/she should have completed her Plus Two from any recognized Board with Chemistry, Physics, and Maths.
  • The person should be fit physically; although spectacles are allowed yet defect in night vision and colour-blindness is not entertained.

The syllabus for the exam is not very tough or rigid; it just tests the basic ideas about the aforementioned topics. In addition, it also checks the proficiency in English and general Knowledge of the student.

Why go for this course?

If you are still not sure that why should you select this specific career, these reasons might change your mind:

Transform your life with Aeronautical Engineering Admission

Students wish to join aviation sector because flying plane and its technology fascinates them. Cockpit and engine designs are extremely complex and difficult to maintain. If you are interested in aircraft maintenance, you should apply for Aeronautical Engineering Admission in the top college of the country. However, make sure that you are totally fit and intuitive enough as the entry process to this course is tough.

Eligibility criteria

Aeronautical Engineering requires the candidate has to meet certain eligibility criteria. Aspiring candidates should complete 10+2 with mathematics and science as main subjects. They need to score a minimum of 65% marks in PCM to become eligible for admission. The aspiring aircraft technician should understand the details of the aircraft. Air traffic has increased in recent time due to growth in business. After completing the course, aviation authorities grant the licensee to the students according to the rule 60 of the aircraft rules 1937.

The primary task of the AME is to repair the aircraft, replace the defective components, and carry out all modifications as well as inspections of the machine. Incompetent technicians cannot diagnose the faults and cause accidents mid air. Aircraft maintenance engineering colleges conduct courses under the guidance of extremely experienced and talented faculties. They have rich experience and knowledge of the working of aircraft. Instructors provide hands on training to the students and prepare them to clear the license examination successfully.

Semesters and subjects

You may opt for Aeronautical Engineering Admission in mechanical or avionics stream depending on preferences. People interested in electronics subject may like to select the latter stream.

A technician certifies the aircraft to fly from source to destination. If experts find any defect in the engine or cockpit, they may not issue clearance. Therefore, the budding technician should have the necessary skill sets to solve the problem and conduct the regular upkeep of the aircraft. Engineers not only learn the basics but also study specialized subjects. They can complete the course in 6 semesters lasting for 3 years. In first semester, the students learn the electrical fundamentals and basics of aerodynamics. Instructors closely work with students to impart knowledge and key aviation concepts. They are building blocks to develop advanced knowledge and the skill sets. Future aircraft technicians also learn the different facets of aviation legislation. They should know the rules and regulations of the work place to avoid legal problems in the near future.

The second semester incorporates subjects such as electrical fundamentals to understand the internal working of the aircraft. Students should also learn the fundamentals of the material hardware and role of the human factor to maintain the aircraft.

Roles of an Aeronautical engineer

A top quality aviation engineer is perfectly capable to identify and solve the engine related problems. Institute conducts special courses on gas turbine and piston engines for the students. Trained experts explain in detail the functionalities of the aircraft and how different components work together to fly the machine. They also conduct sessions on the importance of propellers for the airplane and their effects on speed, take off and landing.
